The pH values of the water define its acidity. Water with a pH value of 7.0 is considered neutral. Below, the value is acidic and above, alkaline. For freshwater organisms (fish, plants and microorganisms), a pH range of 6.5 to 8.5 is generally preferred. In many regions, tap water contains dissolved calcium carbonate and CO2. In general this water is slightly alkaline with a variation between 7.0 and 8.5. Water with a pH value between 6.5 and 8.5 is generally tolerated by most tropical fish. Marine fish need a pH between 8.0 and 8.5. Some fish, however, have special characteristics, so always consult your shopkeeper to find the best pH range for your aquarium.
