It grows up to 3 feet tall and produces spikes of blue flowers during summer. The plant grows as an annual in all climates and as a perennial ornamental in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 9 through 11. It sprouts readily from seeds started indoors six weeks before the last spring frost. Transplant the seedlings after the danger of frost passes and the average outdoor air temperature is above 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Germination direction: 1Fill 3-inch diameter seedling containers with sterile potting mix. Set the containers on a tray, and water the containers' soil until it is thoroughly moistened. 2Sow two Mexican chia seeds in each prepared container. Press the seeds lightly onto the soil surface, and then cover them with a 1/4-inch deep layer of moist soil. Cover the containers with a plastic bag, and set them in a 75 degree Fahrenheit location to germinate, which takes within two weeks. 3Remove the plastic bag when the Mexican chia sprouts above the soil, and move the plants to a sunny window. Water the containers' soil when the soil surface dries, but keep the plants' foliage dry when you water. 4Break up the top 8 inches of soil in a garden bed that drains well and receives full sun. Mexican chia plants grow well in sandy soil and cannot tolerate too much soil moisture. 5Dig planting holes in the garden bed, making them the same depth and width as the seedling containers. If you want to grow the plants as perennials, then space the planting holes 18 to 24 inches apart so each Mexican chia plant has room to spread. If you want to grow the plants as annuals, then space the plants 12 inches apart. 6Lift the seedlings from their pots, and set them inside the prepared planting holes. Fill the holes around the plant roots with soil. Water the soil thoroughly so it settles around the roots. Water the plants weekly until they become established and begin growing well. Once established, Mexican chia rarely requires irrigation.Seed Counts All seed counts should be considered estimates.
