In May, 1939 amid growing tensions in Europe Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth traveled to Canada and the United States. It was their first visit and history says the late queen mother wowed Roosevelt and made Canadians forget about her fickle brother-in-law who had so recently abdicated the throne of England.
This plate was issued by Aynsley of England to commemorate those royal visits. This plate must have been intended for Canadians because it is framed with a wreath of green maple leaves. In the center, the portraits of the King and Queen are against a backdrop of ermine robes, a crown, flags, and in sepia the parliament buildings in Ottawa and Niagara Falls. On the back in green is a crown, Bone China, Aynsley, England, and a silver F.
The plate is in very good condition. No chips or cracks except for a flake off the back of one corner. Invisible when looking at the plate. Insignificant gold wear on the corners. It measures 6 1/8th inches square.
