Stephen A. Mitchell Democratic National Committee 1953 Autographed Letter
Authentically signed letter from Stephen A. Mitchell (1903-1974). An attorney, Mitchell served as the chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1952-56 and managed Adlai E. Stevenson II's successful campaign for Illinois governor in 1948. Mitchell, who demanded that vice presidential candidate Richard M. Nixon resign for the latter's use of a private campaign fund in 1952, earned a mention in Nixon's famous Checkers speech. Mitchell ran for Illinois governor in 1960, losing to Otto E. Kerner Jr. in the Democratic Primary.
Letter is on Democratic National Committee stationery dated February 17, 1953. Mitchell shoots down the idea of sponsoring Mr. Mank's club and new record. It's boldly signed in black ink: "Stephen A. Mitchell." Comes in matching envelope postmarked Washington, D.C., Feb. 17, 1953.
Letter is in crisp, near mint condition.
This item comes directly from the estate of Charles "Chaw" Mank Jr. (1902-1985), noted songwriter, author, bandleader, record producer, sheet music publisher, psychic, radio personality, silent movie theater organist, world champion pen pal, inveterate collector and Hollywood/music fan club pioneer.
