Original one cent postcard picturing popular deejay/musician Lem Hawkins of radio station KFGO, Fargo, North Dakota. It dates from the late 1940s.
Lemuel Q. "Lem" Hawkins was the radio name of Earl King (1904-1974), a native of Skidmore, MO. Lem hosted a popular country western show over KFGO 790 Fargo for many years. He also started a country music orchestra for KFGO comprised of himself (guitar, banjo, vocals), Bill Tripp (trombone, music arranger), Alex Stoffel (tenor sax), Duane Miller (trumpet), Buddy Jones (string bass), Geraldine Linstad (accordion), Charles Lillibridge (drums), Metha Lillibridge (piano). The band played gigs in North Dakota and Minnesota for $12 to $15 per night and played the first dance at Johnson's Barn in Arthur, ND.
Postcard is unused and in near mint condition. It pictures Lem and reads: "Greetings From Lem Hawkins, 790 KFGO Fargo."
This item comes directly from the estate of Charles "Chaw" Mank Jr. (1902-1985), noted songwriter, author, bandleader, record producer, sheet music publisher, psychic, radio personality, silent movie theater organist, world champion pen pal, inveterate collector and Hollywood/music fan club pioneer.
