Remarks:These fossilizedammonites originate from the Cretaceous period (145 to 65 million years Ago). The Cretaceous period is usually noted for being the last portion of the"Age of Dinosaurs"This exceptional specimen is sliced /cut & polished andhas a great blend of colors. The chambers are so amazing and distinct.Ammonites are an extinct marine taxon(subclass Ammonoidea) in the Phylum Mollusca and Class Cephalopoda.Their closest living relative is probably the modern nautilus that theyclosely resemble. Ammonite fossil shells are of particularly beautiful spiralforms. The ammonite’s shell contained a spiraling progression of ever largerchambers divided by thin walls called septa. The animal only occupied thelast and largest chamber. A thin living tube called a siphunclepassed through the septa, extending from the ammonite's body into the emptyshell chambers. The ammonite secreted gas into these shell chambers, enablingit to regulate the buoyancy of the shell. As the ammonite grew, it addednewer and larger chambers toward the larger open end of the coil.Ammonites first appeared in the late Silurian to earlyDevonian Periods (~400 million years ago). Then they continued to thrive fromthe Jurassic period until the end of the Cretaceous period when all speciesof ammonites became extinct along with the dinosaurs (65 million years ago).Ammonites' closest living relative is probably not the modernNautilus (which they outwardly resemble), but rather the subclass Coleoidea (octopus, squid, and cuttlefish). The name Ammonite came from their spiral shape as theirfossilized shells somewhat resemble tightly-coiled rams' horns. Pliny theElder (d. 79 A.D. near Pompeii)called fossils of these animals’ ammonis cornua ("horns of Ammon")because the Egyptian oracle god Ammon (Amun) was typically depicted wearing ram's horns. Oftenthe name of an ammonite genus ends in -ceras, whichis Greek for "horn" (for instance, Pleuroceras). In medieval Europe, fossilized ammonites were thought to bepetrified snakes, and were called "snakestones" or, more commonlyin medieval England,"serpent-stones". They were taken to be evidence for the actions ofsaints such as St Hilda and St Patrick. Traders would occasionally carve theface of a snake into the empty, wide end of the ammonite fossil and sell themto the public. Ammonites from the Gandaki Riverin Nepalare known as saligrams, and are believed by Hindusto be a concrete manifestation of God or Vishnu. This pair of sliced Ammonites isperfect to be made into a piece of stunning jewelry or to add to your fossilcollection.
