❖ Unique Nacre of Japanese Akoyas
Akoya, known as akoya-gai in Japanese, is a saltwater pearl oyster scientifically called *Pinctada fucata martensii*. It has been cultivated in Japan for more than 100 years and is prized worldwide for the elegance of its nacre.
Akoyas are rare because they are highly sensitive to pollutants and other environmental factors. Japanese Akoyas account for less than 2% of the world pearl market.
Nacre (pronounced NAY-ker) is the inner layer of the shell and the outer coating of the pearl itself. Pearl's skin-beautifying and nourishing properties are found in its nacre.
Approximately 94% of our Akoya nacre powder consists of minerals, including calcium in the form of calcium carbonate crystals (CaCO₃), along with magnesium and iron.
About 5% consists of conchiolin, a complex protein containing 17 amino acids that bind the calcium carbonate crystals together. The remaining approximately 1% is pure water.
❖ From Pristine Uwajima Bay
Uwajima Bay is a pristine body of water in southern Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's four main islands, covering approximately 30 square kilometers.
Bordering the bay is the historic city of Uwajima. Its population of approximately 77,000 has cared for the bay for centuries and continues to depend on its Akoya pearl cultivation and fisheries.
