Album notes
Railroad Jerk: Marcellus Hall, Alec Stephen (guitar, vocals); Tony Lee (bass, vocals); Dave Varenka (drums).
Recorded at Tin Pan Alley Studios, New York, New York in May 1996.
New York City's Railroad Jerk employs the same formula of Fall-influenced spastic rhythms, angular melodies and absurdist lyrics as its more famous labelmate Pavement, but adds a barbed blues twist to the mix, skewering its ingratiating tunes with distorted, Delta-style guitar-riffing. Marcellus Hall's enthusiastic yelping and Dave Varenka's knotty, Beefheart-visits-the-East-Village guitar lines are prodded by herky-jerky bass and slap-happy drums.
THIRD RAIL is the most focused and consistent album in the band's discography. Rest assured, however, that it finds Railroad Jerk continuing its tradition of not taking itself, or anything, too seriously. "Well" and "This Is Not To Say I Still Miss You" exemplify the band's worldview: bemused, sarcastic and slightly bitter, but never approaching the angst-ridden extremes of Railroad Jerk's indie-rock contemporaries. Elsewhere, songs like "Natalie" show the band's leering, lustful side and keep things from drifting too far off into esoteric wordplay.
Editorial reviews
4 (out of 5) - ...this album tightens the sound without sacrificing the band's loose, uneven gait....Though not as immediately accessible as ONE TRACK MIND is, it nonetheless proves to be another step forward, fusing the bluesy lurch of old with...a more song-based sound...
Alternative Press (01/01/1997)
7 (out of 10) - ...The band performs shotgun marriages of Delta blues tropes and songs scooped out of the East River; not updating Son House but backdating ODELAY. The results are mostly startling and invigorating...
