When peeled, a lychee fruit, also known as a litchi nut, reveals off-white, grapelike flesh and one polished-looking brown seed. Sowing lychee seeds is an entertaining project for children. 1Eat lychee fruits, and save all their seeds that are plump and at least 1/2 inch long. Rinse all pulp from those seeds.2Dampen sand with water. Fill a 5-inch diameter pot, which has drainage holes, with the damp sand. Plant the lychee seeds 1 inch deep in the sand, covering them with sand. Enclose the pot in a 1-gallon, clear, plastic bag. Zip the bag shut, or fasten it shut with a tie, such as a twist-tie. Set the pot in a warm, shady location. Sprouts should appear above the sand in about two weeks.3Remove the bag from the pot, and place the pot where the lychee seedlings will receive bright light but no direct sunlight. Transplant the seedlings when each has four leaves, moving each seedling to its own seedling pot filled with African violet potting soil. Plant each seedling at the same soil depth at which it grew in its previous pot.4Water the lychee seedlings with rainwater, if possible. Tap water tends to be hard and may cause a buildup of alkaline salts in the soil. Keep the soil evenly damp, but never soggy, at all times. Leach the seedlings' pots once each month, if you use tap water, by pouring tap water through the soil until it runs freely out the drainage holes, carrying excess salts with it.5Expose the lychee seedlings gradually to more sunlight after they are 1 month old. After they adapt to the increased light, give them a permanent position in a south-facing window where they will receive sunlight for most of each day. Move each seedling into its own larger pot with drainage holes when its roots begin to emerge from its seedling pot's drainage holes.6Feed the lychee trees every two weeks in spring and summer with a water-soluble plant fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants. Use the fertilizer at one-half strength, about 1/2 teaspoon of the crystals per 1 gallon of water, when the trees are young. Increase that amount to 1 teaspoon per 1 gallon of water when the trees reach fruiting age, but refrain from fertilizing them during fall and winter.7Give the trees at least 100 to 200 hours of chilling -- temperatures above 32 degrees Fahrenheit but below 45 degrees Fahrenheit -- the winter before you want them to bloom. Expect them to blossom in early spring and fruit in late spring to early summer. The trees, however, probably won't flower and produce fruits until they are at least 5 years old.Litchi chinensis is an evergreen tree that is frequently less than 15 m (49 ft) tall, sometimes reaching more than 19 m (62 ft). The bark is grey-black, the branches a brownish-red. Leaves are 10 to 25 cm (3.9 to 9.8 in) or longer, with leaflets in 2-4 pairs.[8] Litchee have a similar foliage to the Lauraceae family likely due to convergent evolution. They are adapted by developing leaves that repel water, and are called laurophyll or lauroid leaves. Flowers grow on a terminal inflorescence with many panicles on the current season's growth. The panicles grow in clusters of ten or more, reaching 10 to 40 cm (3.9 to 15.7 in) or longer, holding hundreds of small white, yellow, or green flowers that are distinctively fragrant.Fruits mature in 80–112 days, depending on climate, location, and cultivar. Fruits vary in shape from round to ovoid to heart-shaped. The thin, tough inedible skin is green when immature, ripening to red or pink-red, and is smooth or covered with small sharp protuberances. The skin turns brown and dry when left out after harvesting. The fleshy, edible portion of the fruit is an aril, surrounding one dark brown inedible seed that is 1 to 3.3 cm long and 0.6 to 1.2 cm wide (0.39–1.30 by 0.24–0.47 in). Some cultivars produce a high percentage of fruits with shriveled aborted seeds known as 'chicken tongues'.
