Hideko Maehata swimming in a scene from a 1938 German documentary film, "Olympia". - 8x10photo "Hideko Maehata swimming in ascene from a 1938 German documentary film, "Olympia". Olympia is a 1938 German documentary filmwritten, directed and produced by Leni Riefenstahl, documenting the 1936 Summer Olympics, heldin the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany. The film was released in two parts: Olympia 1. TeilBeauty). It was the first documentary feature film of the Olympic Games ever made. Many advancedmotion picture techniques, which later became industry standards but which were groundbreakingat the time, were employed —including unusual camera angles, smash cuts, extreme close-ups,placing tracking shot rails within the bleachers, and the like. The techniques employed arealmost universally admired, but the film is controversial due to its political context. Nevertheless,"All-Time 100 Movies."[1] Olympia set the precedent for future films documenting and glorifyingthe Olympic Games, particularly the Summer Games. The 1936 Summer Olympics torch relay was devisedby the German sports official Dr. Carl Diem for these Olympic Games in Berlin. Riefenstahl laterstaged the torch relay for this film, with competitive events of the Games. Hideko Maehata (???? Maehata Hideko?, May 14, 1914 – February 24, 1995) was a Japanese breaststroke swimmer andWakayama, as the daughter of a tofu producer and as a child learned to swim in the KinokawaRiver. In the fifth grade of elementary school, she set an unofficial youth record for the 50-meterbreaststroke. She went on to win numerous competitions, and was sponsored to attend a women’sboarding school in Nagoya which specialized in swimming, but the sudden death of her parentsin 1931 forced her return home. Yet she was selected for the Japanese Olympic swimming teamevent. She lost to Clare Dennis a mere 0.1 of a second.[1] During the post-Olympic celebrationafter her return to Japan, she stated that she was considering to retire from competitive swimmingdue to family issues, but then Tokyo mayor Hidejiro Nagata reportedly asked her why she didnot bring back a gold medal. Over the next four years, Maehata trained very hard, and set anew world record for the 200-meter breaststroke on September 30, 1933.[1] During the 1936 BerlinGenenger, winning the gold medal for the Women's 200 m breaststroke by over one second. Despitethe time difference, the race was broadcast live in Japan by NHK Radio.[1] In 1937, Maehatamarried Masahiko Hyodo, a professor of the medical school of Nagoya University, and retiredfrom competition. She was awarded the Purple Ribbon of Merit by the Japanese government in 1964and inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1979.[2] She suffered from a cerebrala Person of Cultural Merit, the first sportswoman in Japan to receive such an honor. She diedof acute renal failure in 1995. - 1936" Pickid: 532233 Thisis a high quality REPRODUCTION print.
