The Phantom Carriage (Swedish: Körkarlen,literally "The Wagoner") is a 1921 Swedish film generally considered to be one of the centraland starred Victor Sjöström, alongside Hilda Borgström, Tore Svennberg and Astrid Holm.[1] Itis based on the novel Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness! (Körkarlen; 1912), by Nobel prize-winningSwedish author Selma Lagerlöf. The film is notable for its special effects, its advanced (forthe time) narrative structure with flashbacks within flashbacks, and for having been a majorinfluence on Ingmar Bergman.[2] It is also known as The Phantom Chariot, Thy Soul Shall Bearfilm, with a new and contemporary score from KTL.[4] In 2011, the Criterion Collection releaseda restored version of the film on Blu-ray and DVD.[5] On New Year's Eve, dying Salvation ArmySister Edit has one last wish: to speak with David Holm. David, a drunkard, is sitting in agraveyard, telling his two drinking buddies about his old friend Georges, who told him aboutthe legend that the last person to die each year has to drive Death's carriage and collect theyear. Gustafsson, a colleague of Edit, finds David, but is unable to convince him to go seeher. When his friends try to drag him there, a fight breaks out, and David is struck on thehead with a bottle just before the clock strikes twelve. David's soul emerges from his bodyas the carriage appears. The driver is Georges. Georges reminds him of how he once lived a happylife with his wife Anna, their two children and his brother, until Georges led him astray. Ashown his brother, who had been sentenced to a long term for killing a man while drunk. WhenDavid went home, he found the apartment empty. Furious, he became determined to track Anna downand have his revenge. During his search throughout Sweden, David arrives at a new SalvationArmy Mission on New Year's Eve. Maria does not want to answer the bell, as it is very late,but Edit lets him in. Despite his rudeness to her, she mends his coat while he sleeps. The nextfortune for that period and wants to know the outcome of her prayer. He agrees, but before heleaves, he tears out her patches. Georges informs David that the promise has to be fulfilledand takes him against his will in the carriage to Edit. In another flashback it is shown howEdit once found David in a bar with Gustafsson and another man. Edit persuaded the other manto go home with his wife and gave Gustafsson an advertisement for a Salvation Army meeting.Anna was at the meeting, but David did not recognize her. Later, Anna told Edit who she was,and Edit tried to effect a reconciliation. At first, the couple were optimistic, but soon David'sbehavior drove Anna to despair once again. One night, Anna pleaded with him not to expose theirchildren to his consumption (the same fatal disease Edit caught from him). When he refused,Anna locked him in the kitchen and tried to flee again with their children, but fainted. HeEdit's room, she begs him to let her live until she sees David again. She thinks she is theone to blame for his magnified sins, as she brought the couple together again. When David hearsthis, he is deeply moved. He kisses her hands, and when Edit sees his regret, she can die inpeace. Georges does not take her, saying others will come for her. He then shows David thatAnna, afraid of leaving her children alone after she herself dies of consumption, is planningthe living. Then David regains consciousness in the graveyard. He rushes to Anna before shecan act. With great difficulty, he convinces her he has sincerely reformed. Victor David Sjöström(Swedish: ['v?kt?? '?œ'st?œm] ( listen); in the United States sometimes known as Victor Seastrom;20 September 1879 – 3 January 1960) was a pioneering Swedish film director, screenwriter andactor. He began his career in Sweden, before moving to Hollywood in 1924. Sjöström worked primarily(1924) and The Wind (1928). Later in life, he played the leading role in Ingmar Bergman's WildStrawberries (1957).[1] Sjöström was Sweden's most prominent director in the "Golden Age ofSilent Film" in Europe, and is noted as a pioneer of continuity editing in narrative filmmaking.[2]Born in Silbodal, in the Värmland region of Sweden, he was only a year old when his father,Olof Adolf Sjöström, moved the family to Brooklyn, New York. Mayer to work in the United States. In Sweden, he had actedin his own films as well as in those for others, but in Hollywood he devoted himself solelyfilm based on the Hall Caine novel, The Master of Man. He went on to direct great stars of theday such as Greta Garbo, John Gilbert, Lillian Gish, Lon Chaney, and Norma Shearer in anothereight films in America before his first talkie in 1930. Uncomfortable with the modificationsneeded to direct talking films, Victor Sjöström returned to Sweden where he directed two morefilms before his final directing effort in 1937, an English language drama filmed in the Unitedthe theatre, performed a variety of leading roles in more than a dozen films and worked as directorof the Svensk Film Industri company. At age 78 he gave his final acting performance, probablyhis best remembered, as the elderly professor in Ingmar Bergman's film Wild Strawberries (1957).Victor Sjöström died in Stockholm at the age of eighty and was interred there in the Norra begravningsplatsen(Northern cemetery). Olof Teodor "Tore" Svennberg (28 February 1858 – 8 May 1941)[1] was a SwedishSvennberg made his stage debut at the Folkan Theatre in his hometown in 1877.[2] From 1878 to1891 he was engaged with various national touring theatre companies with actress Julia Håkanssonand was from time to time cast by Swedish stage director Albert Ranft.[3] At the Swedish Theatre,he played in several August Strindberg dramas: Gustav Vasa, starred in Erik XIV in 1899, A DreamPlay in 1907 and The Dance of Death in 1919. He also appeared in many roles by Henrik Ibsen:in John Gabriel Borkman in 1897.[4] In 1920 Svennberg was engaged at the Swedish Royal DramaticTheatre, where he later became director from 1922 to 1928.
