Belgien Efter striderna: hosten 1914 (Belgium After fighting: Autumn 1914) Citadel in Liege- 8x10 photo "The Battle of Arras (alsoknown as the First Battle of Arras, 1–4 October 1914), was an attempt by the French Army tooutflank the German Army, which was attempting to do the same thing during the "Race to theSea", a misleading term for reciprocal attempts by both sides, to exploit conditions createdside had attacked expecting to advance round an open northern flank and found instead that troopshad arrived from further south and extended the flank northwards. The Citadel of Liège was thecentral fortification of the strategic Belgian city of Liège until the end of the 19th century. It is located in the Sainte-Walburge neighborhood, 111 metres (364 ft) above the Meuse valley. The first citadel was built on the heights overlooking the city in 1255. It was rebuilt in aby France shortly afterwards, then rebuilt in 1684. During the Napoleonic Wars it was givenfive bastions in the style of Vauban. By the late 19th century the citadel had become obsolete, replaced by the twelve forts of the Fortified Position of Liège. It continued in use as a barracksand as a command post. In the 1970s the citadel was largely destroyed by the construction ofa hospital on the site. The southern walls remain. An area on the north side is a memorial tobunkers remain on the south side."
