If you've never seen a Parrot Flower before you're not alone. We're talking about a flower so rare that many people still doubt it's actual existence. Thailand' Parrot Flower is also known as the “parrot balsam,” and is classified as endangered and not allowed out of the country. If you want to find out whether or not this little wonder exists, you'll have to book a flight to visit Manipur, India, Burma or a tiny region in northern Thailand near Chiang Mai.

When you look at the flower's side profile, it looks just like a parrot or cockatoo in flight! When images of the Parrot Flower began to circulate on the internet, they were dismissed as being digitally manipulated because very few people had actually seen one.

The parrot flower - Impatiens Psittacina is a rarely found, but absolutely stunning perennial flowering plant from the balsam family. Its existence was first discovered by A.H. Hildebrand, a British official who came across it in the Shan States of Upper Burma. The first seeds of Impatiens Psittacina were presented to the Royal Gardens at Kew in 1899 where it was subsequently germinated and then finally brought to flower in 1900.

Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, one of the greatest British botanists and explorers of the 19th century and Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, published its first scientific description in 1901 and noted that its flower that resembled a 'flying cockatoo'.

Native to Thailand, Burma and parts of India, Impatiens Psittacina received its common name of parrot flower because its blooms bear a striking resemblance to a parrot in flight when viewed from the side.
The parrot flower is an upright plant which branches profusely. It has a compact habit, only growing to an overall height of approximately 1.5 metres. However without its exotic flowers the plant has few redeeming ornamental features looking more like a tall weed than a prized ornamental possession.
Like other Impatiens species it has thick succulent stems and a serrulate margin to its leaves. However it differs from other species within the Impatiens genus as its seed capsules are said not to explode in order to disperse seeds
The flowers are light purple and carmine red and in their natural habitat in Thailand come into bloom in October and November. The lateral sepals are light green, while the lower sepal is bulbous and narrows into a hooked spur.
