Album notes
Although Bettie Serveert's 1993 debut album PALOMINE attracted attention due to the alternative radio hit "Tom Boy," the band's superior follow-up, LAMPREY, proved that the Dutch quintet were no one-hit wonders. One of the most consistent albums of the mid-1990s alternative rock boom, LAMPREY mixes washes of distorted guitars in the style of My Bloody Valentine to lead singer Carol Van Dijk's confessional lyrics (rather like Liz Phair with less of a potty mouth). But it's the band's secret weapon, a knack for concise pop hooks that many alt rockers of their time and place lacked, that makes these cuts so memorable. Highlights include the shimmering, languid "21 Days" and the volcanic rush of the powerful "Totally Freaked Out," which leads directly into the gentle acoustic farewell "Silent Spring."
Editorial reviews
...This Amsterdam quartet may have devised a new genre: coffeehouse grunge. Even when the band whips itself into a modest feedback squalor, the songs feel like a diary confessional set to music thanks to the whispery musings of singer Carol van Dijk... - Rating: B
Entertainment Weekly (01/27/1995)
...they're just another pop-rock band with some fairly simple tunes--it's almost impossible not to like it....they're certainly one of Holland's most genial exports. If you liked the last one, you'll like this one...
Alternative Press (03/01/1995)
...dark, moody, catchy as hell, oddly soothing, and endlessly listenable...
Option (05/01/1995)
4 Stars - Excellent - ...Less gloomy and more inventive than most other bands exploring tonal, introspective rock, Bettie Serveert have that rare knack of releasing the drama in the mundane....There's no melodrama and no histrionics but these moody songs have a kernel of fragile feeling that this quartet exactly pinpoints.
Q (03/01/1995)
...melancholy and...ambitious....The production is still retro...though the group deftly adds touches of orchestral strings, flute, tympani and organ to acoustic strumming and finger-picking...
Musician (03/01/1995)
3.5 Stars - Very Good - ...Bettie Serveert continue to play passionate music that rocks out. Aiming as high as they do, they occasionally miss. But the band's successes are particularly rewarding, as LAMPREY convincingly demonstrates...
