The Magic Gourd Vocabulary Cards, Match Games, and Worksheets all in PDF (Adobe format)

This is a large packet of activities to introduce, practice, and apply vocabulary associated with and part of "The Magic Gourd" by Baba Wague Diakite! It includes many items, so they are listed below.

30 vocabulary cards
a matching game for the cards to the corresponding pictures with 30 pictures and 30 words
a matching game for Bambara words to English meanings with a total of 24 cards
an antoynm and synonym worksheet
2 single pages (or 1 front and back) fill-in-the-blanks sentence vocabulary and answer key
2 single pages (or 1 front and back) fill-in-the-blanks cause and effect chart and answer key
2 cause and effects classifying games with 28 cards for the first game and 8 cards for the second, smaller game
4 corresponding cause and effect classifying games' worksheets and the answer keys for all of them

All the vocabulary and matching game cards are related to "The Magic Gourd." Neither this story nor its illustrations are included, however you should be able to locate The Magic Gourd in many libraries. All the pictures are computer drawings or photos.

I use the picture-word cards to introduce the story's vocabulary, to allow students to understand and discuss meanings of words, to classify the words in their class created groups, and to allow students to make connections from the vocabulary to their personal lives prior to the story. During the text, I use the matching games and worksheets to assist the students in building the vocabulary more. After reading and discussing the text, I do allow students to use the vocabulary cards to help them retell and answer questions regarding the story.

All the picture-word cards that are included are the following:
rummage, undetected, chameleon, generosity, pathetic, ricochet, famine, scrounge, parched, gourds, couscous, carrots, water, roots, rabbit, starving, annoyance, troubled, mosquito, drought, brother, mansa, astonishment, sheeyo leaf, Dogo Zan, fara, A toh!, Fara-Ba!, bee, and fara doron.

The Bambara to English meanings include the following words: jugu, Mansa Jugu, mansa, fara doron, A-toh!, Fara-Ba!, fara, Dogo Zan, Ee ko dee, Sheeyo, U-tah!, and "Feeyeh ku, feeyeh ku. Waara sa kun tay."

I used these with the sixth grade Reading Treasures reading textbook by McGraw-Hill, and the story is exactly the same as the book from a local library a student of mine checked out. We read this book together too. This can be a great read aloud for younger students, but you would have decide if it's good for your students. when I looked it up, the story is actually leveled at a 3.2 grade level.
