Three years after the band's last album of original material, LET'S LOSE IT, Barrence Whitfield & The Savages returned with this fine release. As might be expected, the band underwent a few personnel changes. Ducky Carlisle became the new drummer (he also co-produced the album with longtime Savages guitarist Milton Reder) and Brother Cleve took over on keyboards.
The original material on RITUAL OF THE SAVAGES was written primarily by Reder. There are also well-chosen covers from Eddie Hinton, Loman Pauling (of the Five Royales), Solomon Burke, and others. Executive producer Ben Vaughn (whose "Apology Line" Whitfield recorded on OW! OW! OW!) co-wrote the wonderful "Time Will Catch Us" with Dave Alvin. The album displays true confidence and verve and is sympathetically produced, capturing Whitfield's indomitable spirit.
