A fun and helpful learning tool! Students put together Mr. or Mrs. Gallon Man to learn about the different measurements, and use their person as a reference to practice remembering the measurements. This is a terrific project which has helped many students. The original idea isn't mine, but I updated the project over the years and this is what I currently use. I thought you may like it. Enjoy!
In More Detail:
The gallon man is a craft project to assist students in learning the amount of cups, pints, and quarts which make up a gallon. All the pieces needed to make this craft are included along with a sample picture of what it should become. Students can use the picture to put their Gallon Man or Woman together. There is a "man" and a "woman" gallon figure which are both a greenish color. Their bodies, or trunks, are a gallon jug which is a white t-shirt and say Mr. or Mrs. on it. (There are corresponding heads.) Their arms and legs are made out of the quarts and pints while their four fingers and toes are the cups.
To teach this you can begin by introducing gallon man and putting the craft together while asking questions, such as "How many quarts in a gallon?" Then, confirming or explaining that there are four and that is why Gallon Man has two quarts for the top part of his arms and two quarts for thighs.
Or, you can allow the students to put the craft together and explain there after. It depends on what best suits you and your students.
