Hello. I spent nearly 10 years selling on that other site (you can check my feedback there; It's under the same ID as this one; over 3200 positives, 99.7%). But I thought I'd give this new site a try.
Like all of my cds, this is an Original CD, with original inserts (NO CD-Rs or bootlegs).....
The most immediate element of Hawks and Snakes' debut is Tyler Blakslee's vocals, which earn immediate comparisons to the Psychedelic Furs' Richard Butler, and also Michael Penn (you remember him, he did that song "No Myth" back in 1990? He's also Mr. Aimee Mann). Like those singers, Blakslee's slightly detached air and tendency to swallow his vowels makes him sound haughty and above it all. His air of bored superiority works well with the jagged, new wave-weaned rock provided by the rest of the band. Despite the clear '80s influences, the quartet's music packs enough dissonance and startling shifts to sound wholly contemporary. The octave shift in the guitars in "The Told Us to Go" and the disquieting tempo-doubling midway through "Girls Come Home" are unsettled enough to match the tension and uncertainty that permeate our modern world. On standout "Rivers in the Hive", the band runs a straightforward, guitar-chiming pop song through a shivering chorus effect. This, combined with the minor key coda, replaces the song's inherently sunny mood with pervasive unease.
Hawks and Snakes' first release, "Tame Out the Spell," is a coven of compositions that tackle a spectrum of subjects -- tales of disenchanted ghosts, girls plagued by night-walking creeps, travelers of the way-out unknown, active individuals that turn to stone -- while at the same time, giving a serious salute to the brothers and sisters of good-drinking. With its l5 forceful tracks, a new wave folklore emerges, a blend of old-world Brit-pop and rock music. The result is an enjoyable jaunt into mid-fi indie rock songs. Many of the songs, such as "Daughters Live Forever," "Libra of Hearts," and "Ms. Position," were recorded at home on various four-tracks, tape decks, and boom boxes, while the rest of the album's spells were cast at Big Gig Productions. The balance of stark-to-piled guitars and simple drum sounds makes for an honest and interesting representation of Hawks and Snakes' live shows and basement pangings. For fans of: The Psychedelic Furs, David Bowie, The Pixies, The Who, Robert Pollard, The Cars, Jefferson Starship, a Midwestern mindset, the automobile industry, summer ballgames, and a good night out with your city's very own bar-rail brigade.
