DESCRIPTION: This is one of a small set of 5 (known) cards featuring satirical cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. This card features a cartoon by S. D. Ehrhart entitled "SHE BOUGHT A NEW ONE", which was originally published in Puck, July 25, 1888.

The back carries Arbuckles' familiar "4 Points" sales pitch.

NOTE: A slightly modified version of this card was also used as #73 in Arbuckles' larger 100-card Satire series issued around 1888-89 or so. I believe this smaller set was probably issued first but neither is dated. The cards in this small set are MUCH scarcer than the cards in the larger series.

SERIES: Short Sets - Satire

SIZE: approx. 5¼" x 3¼"

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)

LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified

CONDITION: Very good, I'd say. The card is lightly soiled with slightly worn edges and corners. It has a couple large creases along with a couple of what I would call "thumb bends". (Please see scans.)

MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.

SHE BOUGHT A NEW ONE

MRS. GORMAN WARE--"I must run, now, dear. We're going to have a dreadful shower. I hope your dress won't spot. Why did you come out to-day without an umbrella?"

MISS KORTON--"Oh, I don't know; I suppose because you borrowed it yesterday."

MRS. GORMAN WARE--"How stupid for me to forget! This is your umbrella, isn't it? Well, I'll send it around just as soon as I get home."

From PUCK, by permission.
