Texas must have something in the water. How else do you explain the 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, Butthole Surfers, and, now, The Gris Gris? Singer/guitarist/songwriter Greg Ashley relocated to Oakland, CA, years ago, but he was clearly thirsty before he left. The Gris Gris trade in the kind of heady, witching-hour jams that their name would imply, shifting gears from classic Electric Prunes-style garage rock ("Year Zero" and "Pick Up Your Raygun") to freaky, drifting improvisations ("The Nonstop Tape") and lilting, folk-tinged acid pop ("Mademoiselle of The Morning"). FOR THE SEASON, the band's second full-length, isn't always the easiest listen, and it's certainly a bizarre one, but it also contains moments of undeniably exquisite beauty that bode extremely well for future releases.
