Album notes
The Red Krayola: Stephen Prina, Tom Watson, John McEntire.
The wonderful thing about the Red Krayola has always been that beneath the fractured art-isms and off-kilter ramblings reside some very enjoyable pop songs. This continues to hold true as stage three (stage one being the Texas psyche days and stage two, England) of the band emerges as perhaps its most prolific and consistent period. Joined once again by several Chicago underground luminaries (including Tortoise's John McEntire), INTRODUCTION finds founder and leader Mayo Thompson guiding the band through a sonic maze that touches on everything from folk, cabaret, and jazzy pop to electronica and post-rock, even going so far as to borrow lyrics and melody from "May the Circle Be Unbroken" for the shuffling "Breakout." The addition of accordion player Charlie Abel provides a nice touch that is both buoyant and mysterious, expanding the sonic atmosphere without cluttering it. Thompson's lyrics are still plenty bizarre and delivered in a cracked stream-of-conscious style that comes off like a cross between Bob Dylan and a deeper-voiced Daniel Johnston. The end result is a beautifully scattered yet oddly coherent album from one of the undergound's finest.
Editorial reviews
[I]t just rocks -- unashamedly so. Thompson's enquiring mind is always complemented by an instinctive knowledge of precisely when to cut loose.
