該劇以醫藥世家的興衰為主軸，串連整個故事。清末民初，盛世粉飾下是一個滿目瘡痍的社會，透過藥業描繪當時社會各階層的生活境況，牽涉軍政商。中國女性一直被視為弱者身分，依附在傳統價值觀及制度下生存。然而，面對國勢動盪，時局混亂，傳統價值亦受到衝擊；逆境求生，女性如何自處？杜佳期（鍾嘉欣飾）身陷這個大時代的變遷中，一方面要面對醫藥家業的沒落，肩負起自身家族的命運；同時還要打破迂腐的傳統制度，克服困難。

Set during the Republic of China, when each region of China was ruled by local warlords. The Dou family of Foshan is an affluent family that owns and runs the largest pharmaceutical factory in town, but their wealth comes to a halt when an epidemic outbreak spreads throughout the town. Dou Sam the owner of the pharmaceutical factory is imprisoned and the Dou family pharmacy factory is forced to shut down when patients die after taking their medicine. His only daughter Dou Gaai Kei is dealt with a great blow when she loses her father, her fiance and the comfortable life she has only known of, all at the same time.
