What is HDCD?

HDCD stands for "High Definition Compatible Digital". It is a family of sophisticated technologies that improve the quality of all forms of digital recording and playback. By maximising resolution and minimizing distortion during analog-to-digital conversion, you can be sure that your CD recordings contain the full richness and detail of the original music source.

HDCD-encoded CDs sound better because they are encoded with 20 bits of real musical information. Regular CDs have only 16 bits. HDCD overcomes the limitation of the 16-bit CD format, encoding the additional 4 bits onto the CD, while remaining absolutely compatible with the existing CD format.

HDCD gives you more dynamic range; a more focused 3-D soundstage and an extremely natural vocal and musical quality. With HDCD, you get the body, depth and emotion of the original performance, not a flat digital imitation. HDCD-encoded CDs simply sound better, even in a regular CD player.
