Description

E. inopinus is an incredibly rare and one of the more challenging encephalartos to grow. It comes from the Northern province of South Africa and grows in a very dry dessert which receives very little rainfall. Inopinus stands out in a group of encephalartos, leaflets resemble dioons more than the average encephalartos. Many feel that this specie is closely related to dioons and should have broken away with South America when the continents separated. For what it's worth, inopinus is definitely a worthy candidate for one to grow as mature specimens make a statement in the garden. Inopinus should be grown in a very porus well draining soil since it has evolved to grow in a dry desert habitat. When its needs are met, it grows beautifully as long as it gets ample light and proper nutrition.
