Description: CHEMISTRY IN MEDICINE

The book is subtitled: A COOPERATIVE TREATISE INTENDED TO GIVE EXAMPLES OF PROGRESS MADE IN MEDICINE WITH THE AID OF CHEMISTRY

This interesting illustrated book was published by The Chemical Foundation as a non-profit endeavor. The first printing is given as 100,000 copies. The Foreword explains, in part:

"The impetus which has led to its preparation had its origin some years ago in the tragic loss of a beloved child, Patricia, by Mr. and Mrs. Francis P. Garvan of New York City."

The dedication reads:

"THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO THE WELFARE OF YOUR CHILDREN AND YOUR CHILDREN'S CHILDREN BY ITS AUTHORS AND PUBLISHERS"

Stapled to a page at the very front of the book is a card that reads: Compliments of Mr. and Mrs. Francis P. Garvan, Roslyn House, Roslyn Long Island

The 10 chapters cover the following topics: The Significance of Chemistry and of Its Methods of Attack on Fundamental Problems; Heredity and Development; The Human Body as a Machine; The Story of the Discovery of the Vitamins; The Conquest of Dietary Diseases; Chemical Regulators of the Body; The Policing of Civic Life in the Laboratory; The Alleviation of Suffering; The War on Invading Germs; A Hope of Mankind--Chemotherapy

The book also contains more than 2 dozen illustrations. It has a soft, but stiff, leatherette style cover.

Editor: Julius Stieglitz

Condition: Very good+, I'd say. The front cover has a diagonal crease across the lower right corner and is slightly wrinkled along the top edge. The interior pages appear to be "like new", showing no evidence of actual use.

Published: 1928, by THE CHEMICAL FOUNDATION, Inc.
