Histiaia was found on the Greek island of Euboia, the largest Greek island after Crete which lies just off the eastern
mainland. These tetrobol coins were struck in the important commercial ancient city of Histiaia, named after the
nymph who was the local city goddess. In Greek mythology Nymphs are personifications of the creative and
fostering activities of nature and were pictured as beautiful maidens. They were connected with certain races or
localities and usually have a name derived from the places with which they are associated.
On the island of Euboia the Naiads were nymphs who inhabited the rivers, streams, lakes, marshes, fountains, and
springs of the earth. They were immortal, minor divinities who were invited to attend the assemblies of the gods
on Mount Olympus.
The obverse of these coins shows the elegant head of the nymph Histiaia, hair rolled up and wreathed. On the
reverse shows the nymph Histiaia seated on the stern of a Greek galley, holding a naval standard, reflecting the
islands importance as a seaport.
