Close up photos are very clearThe cracks and the slight burning attest that the beads have been "cooked". This means that they have been subjected to heat in some way very probably heated in some oil or grease as it was the practice with the phenolic resins at the time.These are particularly interesting as they seem to be pre- faturan i.e. from the very early bakelites before the discovery of faturan - thus very close to 1910/1912.All these fact make them extremely rare and unique as a historical witnessof early bakelite and of the practices used by the carvers to transform bakelite.I have had these beads for more than 30 years and they were in form of a classical tesbih with 33 beads but WITHOUT the typical main beadand three smaller beads instead. This would lead me to think that the original strand wasone or more graduated necklaces the beads of which were carved inGermany and"transformed" into aprayer bead strand after manipulation or cooking.Ihave adapted it as a komboloi in its present shape.Beads have : 15 mm dia. and13 mm height on the average as round barrels !! .A very pleasantsize. It is a nice and well balanced strand weighing68 grams with a length of38 cm, mounted on a sturdy cord.The tassel is entirely hand made using faturanbordeaux beads and sterling silver chain and small tassels.
