Botanical Name: Cynara scolymus.
Description: A gourmet vegetable originating from the Western mediterranean in ancient times. Growing to 1.5 metres tall with attractive grey-green foliage. Useful as windbreak in the garden. Cut buds when heads are tight and flat, 5cm below bud. Cut plant just above ground level and mulch after harvesting buds. Plant will produce for at least 5 years. Prefers well drained and limed soils. Best sown direct after last frosts in early Spring. Plant 4-5mm deep. Space 50 - 60cm apart. keep moist.
