Original Brazilian Vintage ex votos (milagros) from the Northeast Region depicting a Nose
All authentic and collected by Folk Art Museum Curator during trips to Brazil
This is a fantastic and rare ex voto lot from northeastern Brazil. The ex votos, or milagres (Portuguese for milagros) in the predominately Afro-Brazilian area of northern Brazil are uniquely carved from wood and frequently reflect the art of West Africa.
The wooden figures, like most ex votos and milagros, are commissioned by a devotee and brought to a church as an offering for a promise fulfilled, frequently for health.
This specific ex voto depict the full nose of a person with nostrils, perhaps reflective of the owner's specific health problem.
This beautiful and rare figure, carved from tropical wood, would be a great addition to any collection of devotional art!
An amazing representation of faith and art bound together into pure Naif Expressionism
