Reviews

Mark Tilden, the inventor of the Robosapien, has added to his list of robotic toys with the addition of the Robopet. This skinny robotic dog can perform a series of simple tricks including the ability to sit up on its hind legs. With use of the punish and reward buttons on the remote control, you can train your Robopet to perform certain tricks more or less frequently than others. Robopet learns! If you shine the remotes pickle point light on the ground Robopet will follow it. Several of the robotic dogs tricks can be activated from the remote control and you can guide him forward, back, left and right too. One of the neatest tricks Robopet does his roll over and play dead. Once hes done playing he will right himself up and continue his digital canine antics. He includes sensors that allow him to see edges and in most situations, avoid falling off high surfaces like tables. But always be sure to catch him just in case! UPDATE: A couple of usage notes for those of you that have bought the Robopet and have questions. The reward and punish buttons only work with tricks that Robopet has chose to do him or herself. If you try to select one of the tricks from the remote control, and immediately hit either the reward or punish button afterwards, that wont train him. Allow your Robopet to do his/her thing and when you see a trick you like hit the reward button. If you dont want to see that trick as often, hit the punish button. Also, here is an important tip on using Robopets edge detection. The on/off switch is actually a 3 position switch, not a 2 position switch. Make sure you have the on/off switch set to the center position which is the ed:on position and has a check mark next to it. The far right position is the ed:off position which has an X next to it. The ed:off position turns the Robopet on but without using the Infrared sensors that detect edges, like the edge of the table. Its only my guess, but Im assuming they did this because the edge detection sensors consume a fair amount of power, and if you dont have Robopet on a table, you can extend the battery life by not turning on the edge detection sensors. Be aware that edge detection does not work in demo mode or in program mode regardless of the switch position. -ROBO NEWS

tips

Ever since the arrival of the Sony Aibo people have tried and failed to produce an affordable alternative to that pricey virtual pet, until now. Robopet is a remarkable, irrepressible, and downright cute bundle of technical wizardry. His (or her, it's a little hard to tell) incredible agility and high levels of inter-activity between his environment and his master (which with any bit of luck is you) makes Robopet a revolution in simulated life, sort of. You can either just leave him be, and he'll wander around and be dog-like, or (if you like the feeling of power) you can control him from the remote. He 'comes alive' with a combination of user-controlled movements and autonomous, free roaming behaviours. His biomechanical movements are very impressive (though sometimes just embarrassing, like when he lifts his leg and pees, to electronic sound effects). He can roll over on his back - a very cool feat for a robot, and lie down, sit, beg, jump, shake his paws, walk and run (not quite a 'run' as many will claim, more of a stiff and sedate canter). It really is quite incredible to see a robot of this size and at this price with such an astonishing range of movements. Not only does Robopet have all the moves, but he also has a whole range of moods from playful to naughty to curious to angry, to depressed and even rude! All of his moods and movements are of course accompanied by some simply fab digital puppy noises. Robopet in actionYou can train him to sit, beg and roll over, and even encourage good behaviour (and of course discourage bad behaviour - but why would you want to do that, it's such fun!). Like any pet you shouldn't be too nice to him or he'll become spoilt, or too mean as he'll just become shy. You can of course just leave him alone and let him wander about being dog-like, or for a laugh take him for a walk, by using the virtual 'Laser Leash' on the remote control. Left to his own devices, Robopet will respond to his surroundings, he can see and avoid obstacles in his path, will respond to sounds and human movement, and will even function as a guard dog. How on earth the men in white coats (not the ones with the restraint belts) managed to cram so much brilliance into such a small and cute package is remarkable. We recently showed him off at a press launch and he was mobbed - so now he's getting rather pleased with himself, but we can't blame him, he really is rather special.
