Full Civil War pension application file for veteran Henry Saeger of St Louis, Missouri who served in the 2nd Regiment, Missouri Light Artillery & the 5th Regiment, USRC. I ordered these records from NARA in 2006 for genealogy purposes, but this Henry Saeger is not my ancestor. This is the complete Civil War pension file as received from the National Archives & Records Administration. It consists of 29 pages, including copies of pension applications & records, depositions of witnesses, affidavits, his burial certificate & other supporting papers.
I will also include copies of the the following, which I've collected while researching this family: 1870 Federal Census Record, (1 pg) for the 2nd Ward, St. Louis, MO; Civil War Service Index Cards (1 each) for service in the 2nd Missouri Light Artillery & 5th Missouri USRC, as well as information from 1860 census records & emmigration information from the Lower Saxony Provincial Archives.
These records pertain to the following:
Heinrich "Henry" Saeger was born 1810-1811 in Brunswick, Germany. He died 8/6/1874 in St. Louis, MO & is buried in St. Pauls Cemetery, St. Louis, MO. Henry married Carolina "Caroline" Talleur about 1838 in Hanover, Germany. Caroline was born 1820-1821 in Hanover, Germany & died 5/16/1891 in St. Louis, MO.
They had at least two children:
Heinrich "Henry" Saeger, born 1851-1853 in Hanover, Germany
Wilhelm "William" Saeger, born 1857-1858 in Missouri
Other possible children:
Henriette Saeger, born in Germany (emigrated to America with the family in 1854)
Heinrich Saeger emigrated to America in 1854 along with his wife, Caroline (Talleur) Saeger, Henriette Saeger (possibly a daughter?) & his son, Heinrich Saeger.
1860 Federal Census records show Henry Saeger living in the 2nd Ward of St. Louis, MO with his wife, Auguste & sons, Henry & Wilh (family #593).
He enlisted with the Union Army 10/4/1861 at St. Louis, MO & served in the 2nd Regiment, Missouri Light Artillery, Company E until being discharged on Surgeon's Certificate of Disability 9/7/1862. He had previously served 3 months in the 5th Regiment, USRC, Company E (Henry Saegers).
1870 Federal Census records show Hy Saeger living in the 2nd Ward of St. Louis, MO with his wife, Caroline & sons, Henry & Wm (family #536).
