Opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, is the species of plant from which opium and poppy seeds are derived. Papaver somniferum has many sub-species or varieties and cultivars. This variation is nigrum and is closest to the wild type.

The pods are more oval-shaped, smaller, and darker than those of other varieties. Openings in the pod allow the seeds to be removed without any drilling or breaking. Because the nigrum variety is less domesticated, it is hardier than the other varieties.

It is legal to grow opium poppies for ornamental purposes. ANY OTHER PURPOSE IS ILLEGAL.

Easy to grow. Perennial to Zone 6.
