It works so well as a stonefly that many people do not realize how well it extends to other situations. The Stimulator floats high with a low-wing profile. With a tail and wing of buoyant elk hair, it can be skated across the surface or dead-drifted in fast water. It’s large profile is easy to see for both you and the trout. One of my favorite materials is the peacock material that comprises the bulk of this fly. It looks very "buggy" and attracts fish from a long ways away.This fly deserves aprominent spot in your flybox. This killer searching pattern is actually a marriage of dry fly and attractor pattern which “stimulates” the feeding reflexes of fish as they key in on dinner. Thegreen peacock materialis like a red flag to a bull at a bull fight so be ready for hard vicious strikes.Stimulators have a low-wing profile and a tail and wing of buoyant elk hair. These flies ride high and even hold a fairly heavy dropper fly, if you decide to go tandem.Dead drift or skate this fly on the surface of the water when the hatch is on. Many stoneflies will hang near vegetation at the shore and fall into the water when windy. Stimulators worked along the banks and overhanging foliage will effectively snag opportunistic fish. Ambushing trout will lay in wait as stoneflies lay eggs over the water and at times stoneflies will flutter into the water by accident. Shhhh ... don't tell anyone, but another very effective method in the spring is to crawl a stimulator along the bottom on a full sinking line and a fluorocarbon furled leader and tippet.This is a must have fly for your fly box.
