The Bacchanalia, orgies in honor of Dionysus, were introduced in Rome around 200 BC. Theseinfamous celebrations, notorious for their sexual and criminalcharacter, got so out of hand that they were forbuyden by the RomanSenate in 186 BC. Bacchus is also identified with the old-Italian god Liber.He was also known as the Liberator (Eleutherios), freeing one from one's normal self, by madness, ecstasy, or wine. The divine mission ofDionysus/Bacchus was to mingle the music of the aulos and to bring an end tocare and worry. This giant vintage Italian porcelain sculpture is outstanding! This figure weighs over 15 pounds and extremely heavy. It measures approximately 22 inches high by approximately 11 inches across by about 9 3/4 inches deep. The detail is phenomenal, and you can see the veins on his arms and his muscles rippling. He is laughing as he holds his wine filled chalice up to the sky. He is wearing grapes and vines on top of his bald head and he is leaning on a wine barrel. He is wearing a toga and is clearly overweight from drinking and eating in excess. The ornately decorated base is covered in vines and just harvested grapes.I have never seen a more elaborate, highly detailed figural like this before. I have seen many really good Italian ceramic and porcelain pieces by such master artists as Giuseppe Cappe, Antonio Borsato, Tiziano Galli, Lenci, Ronzan, Professor Eugenio Pattarino, etc.. before and they don't come even close to the raw talent from the artist who created this piece. I tried to look for a signature on the piece, but could not find one. The bottom of the piece had felt glued to the bottom. I removed the felt on the bottom and there was a white square Guido Cacciapuoti sticker, but it fell off and got destroyed when I removed the felt. There is a lightly impressed signature as shown on the bottom of the base in the pictures. You can also see the remnants of the sticker. I located another awesome piece of Bacchus which was similar to this piece that was signed by one of Guido's Cacciapuoti's talented artists, Silvio Righetto. I have enclosed photos of that piece in this listing so you can see that this is a S. Righetto piece for sure. It is in excellent condition with some slight nibbles on the edges of the floral accents. It is barely noticeable and wouldn't show up in photos.NOTE* Because of the extreme size and heavy weight of this item, it will be considered an over sized box by any shipping carrier that ships it. Please understand I have no control over this and it will be costly to ship. NOTE*** If going overseas; (outside of the USA), it will need to be shipped via UPS or Fedex because the United States Postal Service will not accept any box over 108" in girth. This item far exceeds that size limit and weight (over 25-30 pounds when packed).
