Before I begin to describe this beautiful piece, let me say that I am definitely not well versed in clocks. I know almost nothing about them, as I am not a collector. If you have any questions or need more photos, please ask at anytime and I will be more than glad to reply quickly. This ornate antique French china mantle clock is simply devine!! It is most likely dates from the late 1800's Victorian era to the early 20th century. It is made out of some kind of ceramic or porcelain and is all hand painted. It was done in the Baroque Rococco revival style. In the condition it is, I would say it is more decorative than it is for function. The clock does not work and appears to be missing parts. The dial and clock parts and movements were replaced with a Sessions (Forestville, Connecticut U.S.A) American Model W 60 Cycle AC 110 2 watt one. It most likely once housed a French dial and French movement at one time and someone replaced it with this because the former one broke. In the meantime, what you are looking on is a very fancy European, French clock case. I am sure some of you wonderfully talented watch and clock collectors could get a nice antique face and mechanism and restore this piece to it's former glory. If not, it still looks lovely just the way it is.Despite the fact that it is non-functioning, the clock is really pretty and very intricate in detail. I was told it was made by Sevres, but I am not 100% sure because I don't know much about Sevres porcelain . It has a Sevres blue scroll style mark and France marked next to it underneath inside the base. There is a raised number 49 too. The clock is surrounded by gloriously hand painted blue cornflowers that were painted completely by hand. On the front is a portrait painting of two young colonial era lovers seated on a hillside. It is signed by the artist "Felix". The clock does have all over crazing, a stable crack underneath the bottom, some paint wear/loss and some fading and wear to the gold gilding from age which is normal over time. It has a few spots of tiny beige paint drops on it. It appears over the years somebody painted their walls and a little bit of paint splatter got on the clock. I was able to chip some of it off with my fingernail. Photos show condition too.It measures approximately 8 1/2 inches tall by 8 inches across the widest by about 4 inches deep. The opening on the front for a new dial is approximately 3 3/4 inches across and the hole on the back measures approximately 3 3/4 inches also.I feel the cornflowers painted are symbolic. Native to the mountains of Europe, mountain bluet flowers are otherwise known as bachelor's buttons, basket flower, bluebottle, or hurtsickle, or cornflowers. They bloom from late spring to early summer. The origin of mountain bluets is France and they grow like weeds on hills and in the countryside. These flowers were hand painted and are beautiful, fringed, violet-blue flowers with deep purple centers. In Victorian times, flowers had specific meanings. Cornflowers symbolized Celibacy, Anticipation, Hope, Devotion, Love, Single Blessedness, Delicacy and Perfection.Cornflowers were a pagan symbol of delicacy and elegance. To Estonians they symbolized ones daily bread, and after the Estonian flag with its cornflower blue stripe was outlawed during the Soviet occupation they came to represent liberty. Some sources cite the cornflower as a symbol of courage because although it looks delicate and fragile it lasts though adverse weather and neither fades nor wilts. In Chinese mythology the cornflower represented the sky, the home of all the Chinese gods.Bachelor's buttons were worn as a tradition so that a cornflower was worn as a buttoniere by a young man in love and would quickly fade if his love was in vain. ****International buyders:We are not responsible for Taxes, VATs and Custom's Duties your country may impose upon you.
