St. Mary’s Island at Whitley Bay, Northumberland, a small island with lighthouse and cottages, this Lighthouse was built in 1898 and was in use for 86 years until 1984, the tower is made up of three quarter of a million bricks and is 120ft (36.6 metres) high with 137 steps inside the tower to the lantern room where visitors can have panoramic views as far as the eye can see.
St. Mary’s Island is extremely popular with visitors throughout the whole year, and is also a safe haven for migrating birds and occasional seals who travel down the coast from the Farne Islands.
A landmark that can be spotted many miles away up and down the North East coastline from the gleaming painted white lighthouse.
This photograph was taken as the sun was going down to the left of the image as the sea was fairly calm.
