Reprint of a book originally published in 1825. A denunciation of life in the South. Pearse was born in 1786 in Massachusetts, the son of a poor farmer. After farming, he turned to the manufacture of potash and later in 1818 decided to accept his brother's invitation to manage a new plantation near woodville, in the southwest corner of Mississippi. He believed slavery was an abomination and observed and reported upon the life of all classes, and his comments on the lower strata of white settlers is unique and revealing (Frontier Life, Pioneer Life, Mississippi)
