"WAR Vol. 1" is a rare mixtape that was recorded during the short period of time that Kurupt was beefin with his Dogg Pound brothers. Anyone who knows the story knows that Snoop, Soopafly and Daz Dillinger were outspokenly hating on Death Row and Suge Knight for how they were treated when they were on that label and were slaves to Suge because of their contracts, when all of a sudden out of nowhere Kurupt decided to go back and sign a one-album contract with Suge to be released on Death Row Records, which started a brutal war of words between Kurupt and all of the Dogg Pound camp. Song after song, freestyle after freestyle was released on mixtapes and leaked online, with hate-filled lyrics about everything from beating Kurupt down in the streets to murdering him if they caught him slippin. Kurupt never expected his life-long homies to react this way just because he made a business decision that put another million in his pocket, but it was more personal than that for the Dogg Pound Gangstaz, it was like Kurupt had switched sides and was now one of the enemy. Snoop stayed out of the hate toward Kurupt for the most part, but after Daz and Soopafly released several songs that not only dissed him but threatened his life, Kurupt made a decision to strike back rather than take the disrespect and look like a b*tch. Kurupt made a call to top Los Angeles DJ, DJ Strong, and the next day the two were in the studio working on "WAR Vol. 1". Technically, WAR is a mixtape, but for all intents and purposes it is a full-blown street album, with tons of exclusive content and original songs. Kurupt vents all his anger and frustration in his lyrics, addressing everything from the fact that he was hurt by his homies turning on him, to the fact that he's a gangster at heart and he isn't going to sit back and let anybody punk him out and threaten his life on wax. Kurupt didn't come alone in this effort though, he brought the entire Death Row camp with them, making "WAR" exactly what it was. Many guest rappers make appearance on this CD with Kurupt, unleashing their lyrical gasoline on the Dogg Pound and their affiliates. Since this so-called war occurred, Kurupt has now made peace with his homies from Tha Pound, and is now recording and touring with them again, making this time-sensitive piece of hip hop history even more collectible!
This has long been considered one of the most collected and sought-after mixtapes of ALL TIME. There was originally only 5,000 copies manufactured, but they sold so quickly that DJ Strong went back and had another 5,000 pressed up, so there are 10,000 Official copies in existence, but most of them are in the hands of collectors who wouldn't sell them to you if you offered them a million bucks. Anyone who is a fan of Kurupt or Tha Dogg Pound NEEDS this one in their collection! Don't sleep!
