Synopsis:

Conceived and designed by award-winning New Yorker cartoonist R. O. Blechman, "the master of the squiggly line, "The Soldier's Tale is a dazzlingly animated adaptation of the 1918 theatre piece with music by Igor Stravinsky and text by the Swiss poet, C.F. Ramuz.

In this intriguing updated version, Blechman makes ingenious use of paints, crayons, color pencils, cutouts and collages to depict a world of high-tech temptation and nuclear apocalypse.

Based on the classic Russian folk tale about a soldier who is hoodwinked by the devil into giving up his violin (man's spiritual self) in return for a book that tells the future (the world's materialism), The Soldier's Tale features the voices of Max von Sydow as the devil, Galina Panova as the princess, Yugoslav film director Dusan Makavejev as the soldier, and Andre Gregory as the narrator.

Stravinsky's pioneering music is brilliantly performed by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Gerard Schwarz.
