Royal Schwabap framed porcelain tile windmill swans Van Hunnick design 1984 vintage 1498vf

This framed porcelain tile shows a buchollic Dutch scene with a windmil, cottage, and swans swimming in a pond. The picture is decaled onto a 6 inch porcelain tile made by Royal Mosa Holland. The frame is walnut stained wood that adds another 1.20 inch to the size of the framed tile.
Date on the back stamp is 1984. The decal was applied to a preglazed porcelain tile and then fired.

The picture is one of many designed for Ter Steege by Johannes Coonraad Van Hunnick. These scenes are typical rural Dutch scenes and very popular as souvenirs.

Royal Schwabap tiles and transfer ware have been made by the Ter Steege company since 1933 in Enter, Holland. The company continues to be managed by the family today. Production of the decaled tiles began in the 1970s. The name Schwabap is a merging of Schwarzenbach an der Saale, the town in Germany where Ter Steege gets the porcelain, and Ap, a nickname for Albert Steege the founder.
