Synopsis:
After being preserved in tightly wrapped aluminum foil for 200 years, a 20th-century man wakes up to a future in which science has proven deep-fried foods and cigarettes to be healthy, machines simulate orgasms, and a wheelchair-bound dictator with a white dog controls everything. Futuristic hilarity ensues.
One of Woody Allen's "earlier, funnier" ones, the jokes and concepts from this stellar film have become staples of the comic repertory.
In 1973, nerdy Miles Monroe goes in for minor surgery--and ends up cryogenically frozen after his untimely and unexpected death. But 200 years later, Miles is up and about again, in a brave new world of huge vegetables, automaton servants, and orgasmatrons--the ultimate way to get sexual pleasure without having to worry about another human being. But the hapless milquetoast also becomes a victim of fate, wanted for being an alien, and gets captured by a band of guerrillas who wants to recruit him to their cause.
The 20th century sure was never like this.
When one speaks of Woody Allen films, it is common to talk of his `early, funnier films' and his later serious work (although that is beginning to change back recently). Love and Death falls easily into the period of `early funnier films'. The plot here is very loose and is simply an excuse of a series of observations, one liners and set pieces. The comedy is a wonderful mix - there is plenty of slapstick, physical comedy. This is complimented by a huge amount of one liners and witty monologues and a great banana skin joke!3
Overall this is yet another example of an `early, funnier' Woody Allen film. It is an excellent comedy on so many levels.
THIS IS A 12" LASERDISC AND WILL NOT PLAY IN A DVD PLAYER
