Cosmetic Condition
Disc (s): Excellent - Very few very light to very minor hairline surface swirls or very light fingerprint marks
Jacket: Very Good - Normal shelf wear, few creases, light scuffs, slightly worn-out corners or edges and small splits middle of top and bottom spines

Synopsis:

This is a meditative, thought-provoking, and emotionally absorbing movie. It is not perfect, and was not perfect in it's previous two incarnations, but Robert Wise and company took a very brave stab at a mature piece of science fiction.

This movie is often regarded as a poor beginning to the big-screen Trek series. Obviously I disagree, but I will give credence to some of the arguments that frequently dog this movie. Too slow? Sure it is, in places. Dated effects sequences? Yes, but therein lies the rub: they've remade scenes for the DVD release, a la 'Star Wars'. I do appreciate that Mr. Wise was in control of this updated version, but I cannot excuse the fact that Paramount could have easily given us a no-frills transfer of the original release as a "bonus." I do enjoy the documentary features that were included on disc two (although this is far from the highlight of the 2-disc Trek releases so far), but I'd gladly trade them in for a simple transfer of the original film.

All the debate over the new Star Wars DVDs prompted me to rethink my stance on the rejiggering of this movie. I snatched it up on the day of release, and am actually very pleased with the version presented. Unlike some of the jarring intrusions of modern technology found in the Star Wars films, the new effects blend rather seamlessly here. Of course, it must be noted that there are also numerous trims and edits throughout. At the very least, all of the material that appeared in either the original cut AND the expanded TV version that was released on VHS / laserdiscs is included on the second disc.

All the nitpicking aside, this is a staggering movie that still packs a great punch after all these years. But I am always in favor of preserving films in their original version.
