Synopsis:
Billy Crystal stars in the comedy classic about careers, cowboys and midlife crises. It's the story of three friends who ride and rope their way down a trail that leads to a better understanding of themselves and each other.The western adventure begins in the heart of New York City, where a thoroughly urbanized executive is struggling to find meaning in his life. His two best friends have the perfect cure: a "fantasy vacation" where they can play cowboy on a real-life cattle drive.Billy Crystal plays Mitch, a 40-year-old radio ad salesman who lives in Manhattan with his wife and two children. He feels trapped in a humdrum existence and is so unenthusiastic about his job that he embarrasses his nine-year-old son by giving a lackluster speech during career week at the boy's school. Mitch's tolerant wife says, "Go and find your smile." So he joins his best friends, Ed (Bruno Kirby, a sporting good store owner, and Phil (Daniel Stern), a grocer, for a two-week vacation on a working dude ranch. After learning the rudiments of riding and roping, they head out into the wilderness on a cattle drive led by Curly (Jack Palance).Three middle-age buddies (Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, Bruno Kirby) facing personal crises decide to sign up for a two-week cattle run for a change of pace. The trail proves a tougher place than anyone thought, and the boss (Jack Palance) is a grizzled taskmaster who doesn't cotton to tenderfoot urbanites. Popular in theaters, the film is both funny and moving, with Crystal giving one of his most complete performances and Palance (who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) a lot of colorful fun. Director Ron Underwood (Heart and Souls) subtly shifts the tone of the film from broad comedy to poignancy over its running time, and he makes the story's end a bittersweet victory that feels like life as most people know it.
