Synopsis:
This 1994 update on the Lassie legend stars Thomas Guiry as a troubled city kid whose family retreats to the country, where he befriends the famous collie and changes for the better. Conflict develops when a ruthless sheep rancher causes trouble for everyone. Director Daniel Petrie (The Bay Boy) aims only to revive the healthy spirit of previous Lassie films (and the television series) in a new milieu, and toward those modest ambitions--predictable plot and all--he succeeds. Guiry is unusually good in what many young actors would have taken to be just another blossoming-teen part. Very enjoyable update of the classic Lassie film, even if the villain of the piece is so stereotypical it's laughable (he uses guns and chews tobacco, so he must be a bad guy, right?). Gorgeous scenery and the kids aren't goodie-goodies but reasonably real children. Richard Farnsworth is wonderfully warm as the grandfather. "Lassie" was a really, really good movie. I never saw it in the theaters but I read the book based on this new version of the movie. I liked the book a lot and wanted to see the movie. But since my mom didn't want to see something bad happen to Lassie, we didn't go. I rented the movie when it first came out and loved it. I especially liked that it was true to the book and Lassie didn't die at the end. I bought the movie for myself and almost everybody in my family has seen it. It's a wonderful movie and one the whole family can enjoy. Although you will cry during certain parts, overall it isn't a sad movie and teaches a lot of good things to kids.
