Synopsis:
This children's movie is set in sunny Key West during a Fourth of July celebration. Three buddies sneak off to their secret fort and to their surprise discover a Russian sailor hiding there. He is Mischa, who with two shipmates was assigned to sneak into the town military base to steal certain computer parts. Unfortunately, a rafting accident left him stranded and alone. The boys eventually decide to help poor Mischa make it back to his home. It is during the Cold War and all Americans have a view of Russians as one thing: bad people. A group of American boys discovers a Russian sailor washed up on the coast of Florida and decide to befriend him, assuming that he is friendly and will bring them no danger and thus go against the ideas of their parents, as well as the government. Although it looked like it was intended for kids, enjoyed it. During the time of the cold war, a Russian officer is stranded in the US. Befriended by a group of kids, he finds friendship. There is cultural commentary even the young will understand. Although this movie didn't do well in the theatres, it is one of my favorite "sleepers." Too bad there are no special features but with Leaf Phoenix who is now known as Joaquin and little Peter Billingsley, it is a must have to your collection.
