Synopsis:

The greatest ballet of the Romantic era, Giselle has had a long and distinguished history in Moscow, having been staged there in 1843, only two years after its creation in Paris. The present version, by Bolshoi Artistic Director Yuri Grigorovich, builds upon this proud tradition of preservation and innovation.

The role of Giselle is the most coveted in the Romantic ballerina's repertory, and many consider it to be the summit of Bolshoi prima ballerina Nalya Bessmertnova's artistic achievement. Permeated throughout with a sense of tragic spirituality, Bessmertnova's interpretation was considered iconoclastic when it was first presented, over a quarter of a century ago. Now in the full flower of her artistic maturity, she has been captured here in her legendary role for the ages.

Supporting Bessmertnova is a stellar cast: Yuri Vasyuchenko as an elegant Count Albrecht, Maria Bilova as a Myrtha of chilling beauty, and the world-renowned Bolshoi corps de ballet as the ghosts of jilted maidens bent on vengeance.
