The story begins in 1915 and spans half a century. The plot focuses on the life of the Cleary family, who have made their way from the New Zealand poor to the managers of one of the largest Australian estates, Drogheda
In Australia, the Cleary family is met by a young parish priest, Ralph de Bricassard. Ten-year-old Maggie, the only daughter in the family, attracts his attention with her beauty and shyness. As she grows older, Maggie falls in love with him, but they are not destined to be together, because Ralph, like any Catholic priest, took a vow of chastity
Throughout their lives, lovers have pursued their dreams: Ralph seeks to make an excellent career, to see the church strong and prosperous; Megann dreams of a family, children, her home. Their wishes come true, but this does not bring happiness, because without each other they are forever alone. The author managed to show how different love can be - for the earth, God, power, man or woman, children, and how many people can invent obstacles for themselves, suffering from pride, stupidity, ambition, and ridiculous circumstances. The novel teaches us to enjoy every day and love without fear of being judged by others.
