Offered is what is believed to be a beautiful Antique Meiji Period Satsuma Teapot with Jakatsu Glaze from the Ryumonji Kilns in the Kagoshima prefecture. Circa 1850. [Note: Information taken from research on the web.] The surface of this exotic pot is very textural, because the glaze has been applied in a very unusual manner, onto the bare clay. The effect is very beautiful overall, as it glistens. It is believed that this pot was most likely transported by someone who came from Japan to the USA, because there are so few available here, and which also supports the idea these were not made for export. In very good condition for the age. No cracks or repairs. A few old flakes to inside rim of lid. Some light chipping to end of spout. Small area on knob that is unglazed and a couple areas on teapot unglazed. I believe it maintains the original bamboo handle which is in very good condition. Satsuma teapots like these were primarily used for Tea Ceremonies. The pot measures 8 inches from rear to tip of spout. The spout is fed by 3 holes. The body is 6 inches wide. The pot stands 5 1/2 inches tall with the lid on. The opening is 3 1/4 inches in diameter. Comes from a smoke-free environment.
