Their crude performance of Faust arouses derision of the audience to the great distress of their leading lady, Lydia Welling, an aspiring young actress. In contrast, a successful actor of the metropolis, Alex Swinborne, finishes a season and leaves for a holiday. He falls from the train and is carried to the inn at Gotten where is nursed by Lydia (1070). Rl. 2. Upon his recovery he asks to e allowed to appear with the players for one performance which is a great success; he is greatly impressed by Lydia and asks her to go with him to the city. Although reluctant to leave the other players, she goes with him. (1970). Rl. 3. She becomes a great success and the young Count Robert de Gotton falls a victim to her charms. Alex is jealous, but in gratitude for all he has done for her, she consents to marry him, to the young Count's distress (2815). Rl. 4. The Count calls to see her as Alex is about to leave for a charity matinee; they leave together, but the young man returns to Lydia and they declare their mutual love. Alex observes them from the train through his binoculars and returns home in a jealous rage (3889). Rl. 5. During a performance that night, Alex shoots Lydia onstage; he is arrested and sent to jail. Lydia recovers and full of contrition send Robert to the jail to beg Alex's forgiveness; Alex refuses to see him (4432). Rl. 6. Alex is released from jail, an embittered man forsaken by his friends. Lydia and Robert are married and take up residence at his castle in Gotten, in the grounds of which he has erected a statue of Lydia in her role as `Pierette'.
