The handwritten note:
We found a note, handwritten on light blue paper, neatly folded and tucked inside a tiny knitted doll mitten. It reads (last names abbreviated here for privacy):
"This was given* to Aunt Lizzie C W when she was nine years old by her Aunt Lucy C (motherβs fatherβs fatherβs sister). Elise G
CONDITION: The doll has been carefully stored, and all limbs and the head are attached. There is an old repaired tight crack in the bisque that runs from the lower middle back of the neck area around below the right ear, and about 1 inch into the upper right cheek area. The scalp area of the head is glued together, and we have not attempted to disassemble the head or to remove the dollβs wig. The dollβs right eyebrow has a small shallow scrape or surface chip that is about the size of a large grain of rice, but the underlying eyebrow detail in that area is intact. There is a smaller depression in the forehead area, smaller than a grain of rice. The fingertips of the left hand have broken off, as have the pinky and middle fingertip of the right hand. The body is intact and feels firmly and evenly stuffed. The glued areas at the forearms and chest and upper back areas have darkening and residue from the glue. There are small, circular muslin fabric pieces at the hip, knee and crotch areas, which appear to be for reinforcement. The dollβs wardrobe and accessories, though clearly very old with normal age-related fading, are all in very good vintage condition. These precious pieces were found neatly folded, clean and carefully placed with the doll.
